Discover the amazing self-glazing paste Egyptians developed over 7000 years ago to make jewelry and amulets for the Pharaohs! Egyptian paste is a non-plastic, self-glazing, low-fire clay.

In this workshop, participants will gain hands-on knowledge on how to make Egyptian Paste and create contemporary pieces.

  • Learn to mix Egyptian paste to the proper consistency for hand building small non- functional items like: amulets, beads, buttons, boxes, small sculptural objects. Paste materials and bisque-fired press molds or sprig molds will be provided.

  • Learn to laminate the paste choosing from 5 colours provided.

  • Learn to make a simple bead tree and prepare trays for firing pieces.

  • After slow drying, workshop pieces will be fired to cone 06 in Toronto Potters kilns (firing included).

  • Items must be left in the studio to dry slowly and cannot be touched once the drying process begins or you will disturb the surface glaze being developed during drying. Pick up fired work in May.

Workshop Participants Need to Bring The Following:

  • apron or smock

  • pin tools, or any other hand building tools

  • bisque fired texturing stamps or rollers

  • small sponge and small soft natural hair paint brush to apply water

  • metal cookie or fondant icing cutters of different shape, if available

  • any small sprig or press molds you may have (must be made of bisque clay, not plaster)

  • sense of humour and willingness to have fun!
